How to Clean and Care for Your Alligator Chopper
To keep your Alligator Chopper performing like new for years, proper maintenance is key. Our patented Swedish design is built for durability, but a few simple cleaning habits will ensure your stainless steel blades stay razor-sharp and your collector stays crystal clear.
1. The "Golden Rule": Rinse Immediately
The easiest way to clean your Alligator is to rinse it under warm running water immediately after use. This prevents food starches (like those from potatoes) or sugars (from fruit) from drying and hardening on the blades or inside the grid.
2. Use the Patented Cleaning Grid
Every Alligator comes with a custom-fit cleaning grid (the mesh screen) that sits on the base. Because the cleaning grid is made of precision-molded plastic, we recommend rinsing it under warm water immediately after use. The high heat of a dishwasher can occasionally warp its shape, so hand-washing is the best way to ensure a perfect, long-lasting fit.
- After chopping, simply lift the cleaning grid upward.
- This action pulls any trapped food scraps out from between the teeth of the base in one motion.
- Rinse the grid and the base separately to ensure no residue remains.
3. Dishwasher Safety
Most Alligator models and components are top-rack dishwasher safe.
- Plastic Models: Use a standard cycle on the top rack.
- Stainless Steel 3094: The stainless steel top and blades are highly durable and dishwasher safe.
- Pro Tip: While dishwasher safe, frequent high-heat cycles can eventually affect the clarity of plastic collectors. For the longest lifespan, a quick hand-wash with mild soap is recommended.
4. Caring for the Blades
Our blades are made from premium South Korean 301 stainless steel. To maintain their edge:
- Avoid "Scrubbing" the Blades: Never use abrasive steel wool or harsh scouring pads directly on the cutting grids, as this can dull the precision edge.
- Air Dry: Allow the blades to air dry completely before reassembling or storing to prevent any moisture from being trapped in the hinge.
5. Removing Odors and Stains
If you have been dicing heavy aromatics like garlic or onions:
- For Odors: Rinse the collector and base with a mix of water and a little lemon juice or white vinegar.
- For Stains: If high-pigment vegetables (like carrots or beets) leave a slight tint on the plastic, rub the area with a small amount of vegetable oil before washing with soap.
6. Storage Tips
To protect the blades and save space:
- Store the interchangeable grids inside the collector box.
- Ensure the unit is fully dry before closing it to maintain a fresh, odor-free kitchen tool.
